The Open Championship: Nicolas Colsaerts off to another great start of the year
Nicolas Colsaerts fired a five-under par 65 on day one of The Open Championship to take the share of the second place on Thursday, July 19, 2012.
Colsaerts is currently having an amazing season on the European Tour, as he managed to record a total of seven top-10 finishes in the 16 events that he has played so far. It also includes a victory in the Volvo World Match Play Championship held in May.
Therefore, his opening round performance at the Royal Lytham & ST Annes Golf Club was not new to the game followers.
He got off to a stunning start and recorded an eagle on the second hole that he played. However, a bogey on the very next hole proved to be a little disappointing for him.
Yet, he did not lose the momentum and kept on playing good shots on the course. As a result, he managed to add four birdies to his score card till the end of the round. He is currently one stroke behind the pace set by Adam Scott with a six-under par 64.
"I kept hitting very good shots in succession early on, so really got the momentum of the round going. Didn't really hit any bad shots today".
Paul Lawrie and Zach Johnson were the other two players to record the same score as he had to share the second spot.
The 14-time major winner Tiger Woods shared the sixth position after carding a three-under par 67.
Meanwhile, Ernie Els, who has a stunning record of top-three finishes in each of the last two editions of the British Open at Royal Lytham, also joined Woods on the leaderboard with a 67 on his scorecard.
According to him, he has improved greatly in the past few weeks when it comes to his putting. He told that he had been striking the ball well, which earned him a good position after round one of the third major event of the year.
"It's a big day today, a little tight because it's such a big day. I feel good this week. I feel my ball-striking is as good it's been for quite some time. My putting has really come around".
