The Open Championship round one: Another disappointing start for Rory McIlroy – Golf news
Rory McIlroy’s year of frustration continues as he carded an eight-over par 79 in the opening round of The Open Championship, his worst first-round performance in a major championship.
It has been a long time since the golf fans witnessed him playing some good shots on the course. His last victory came in November, 2012 and entering the 2013 golf season, he was enjoying a great run of form.
However, it appears as if the current season proved really unlucky for him, as he performed poorly almost in every tournament he has played so far.
Entering the third major event of the season, he was hoping to gain his form back. However, the luck was still not with him and he is now on brink of missing the cut once again.
The world number two bogeyed the fourth and the fifth hole at Muirfield, followed by a birdie on the seventh hole. Entering the back nine of the course, he was just one over for the round.
However, the back nine proved to be really difficult for him, as he double bogeyed twice, along with four other lost shots, to finish way down the leaderboard, sharing the 134th position.
Talking to the reporters after finishing his round, he expressed his disappointment in once again failing on the course and said that he himself did not knew where he was making the mistakes.
“It's strange, I mean, I wish I could stand up here and tell you guys what's wrong or what I need to do to make it right,” McIlroy said afterward. “It's just a matter of going through the right process to hit them, and that's something that I obviously haven't
been doing recently.”
“You've just got to try and play your way out of it. But it's nothing to do with technique. … I'm trying to focus and trying to concentrate. I can't really fathom it at the minute, and it's hard to stand up here and tell you guys what's really wrong,” he
added.
McIlroy will now have to post some exceptional scores in the second round if he wants to make it to the last two days of the tournament.
