We will be doing some camping and traveling through out the state of Oregon. Any ideas of places to check out?

  1. Go down the Rogue River.  This place is great.  The guides are awesome.

  2. My daughter and I have taken a couple of road trips on Highway 101 through Oregon, and it's been beautiful.  There are lots of places to camp all along the coast.

We loved Astoria, which is just south of the border with Washington state.  It has lots of history, including forts and museums.  It was a stop for the Lewis and Clark expedition (obviously, the town of Astoria wasn't there at the time!)  There are at least 3 state parks within a short drive.  If you go, be sure to check out the Astoria Column.  It's a 125 foot tower which sits on a 600 foot hill, and the outside of it is decorated with depictions of the history of the area.  You can climb to the top and get an incredible view of the Pacific Ocean, the Columbia River, and the surrounding mountains.

Tillamook is a bit inland but still on 101.  We liked the cheese factory, especially the free samples.  There are also places to taste wine and to buy some delicious fresh fruit.

We also liked Gold Beach, which is maybe an hour or so north of the California border.  We would like to spend some more time there and explore the Rogue River.  But the ocean beaches are long and beautiful, and when we came through less than 2 weeks ago, Gold Beach was clear and sunny, while much of the rest of the coast had been fog-bound.

If you have the time, just enjoy a leisurely drive on Highway 101.  It is at or near the coast the entire length of the state, and you will surely see lots of things that make you say, "Let's stop and check that out!" It's a great place for a bit of spontaneity and adventure, and you should be able to find good camping all along the way.

  3. Honeyman State park. Dunes, lakes, beach, trees,... beautiful.

  4. I asked a similar question and was directed to Seaside - yuck.

I did go to Cannon Beach area and if I was to do it again - I would go there and south of there.

back at the Portland area - you can quite easily see a few of the amazing falls in the gorge.  that would be worth some time.
