The Ospreys devastate the FAU Owls with superb 4-1 victory – Volleyball news
The women volleyball team of North Florida University, the Ospreys, went against instate rival Florida Atlantic University on Friday, March 30 and claimed a 4-1 victory.
The Jacksonville Beach sand courts hosted the match, while good number of spectators witnessed the live action of volleyball. The victory against FAU Owls improved the win/loss record of Ospreys to 4-2.
The UNF team roster included Nicole Baran, Alison Shirley, Marija Pantovic, Kelsey Smith, Carolyn Jenkins, Julie Trembley, Paige Pridgeon, Britt Claessens,Dagnija Medina, and Emily Strack.
In the first encounter between UNF and FAU, home duo of Nicole Baran and Alison Shirley led the Ospreys to victory. The UNF pair showed remarkable consistency in attack and defence, which helped them dominate the opponents. The FAU players dropped opening
set with big margin of nine points (12-21) and failed to sustain the pressure in the second set. The Ospreys closed the match by posting 21-9 in the second set.
The start of the game was good for Ospreys as they bagged an easy win. However, the Owls attacked with full intensity in the following session. The pairing of Cintia Nightingale and Thacilli Pereira came strong on UNF tandem, which was composed of Marija
Pantovic and Kelsey Smith. The Owls defeated the Ospreys in the same fashion and posted 2-0 (21-18, 21-17) on board.
The Owls levelled the game score by winning second session but that was the only victory they had in the match. The Ospreys did not allow the Owls to come up in the following three sessions of the game. The duo of Paige Pridgeon, Britt Claessens further
strengthened UNF’s grip on the game with another straight set win (21-7, 21-13).
North Florida improved to 2-1 by grabbing victory in the third flight by Carolyn Jenkins and Julie Trembley. They breezed past the FAU pair in just two sets 2-0 (21-16, 21-7).
Eventually, Dagnija Medina and Emily Strack closed the match with their splendid feat. They clinched success by sending 2-1 (19-21, 21-12, 15-12) on board and led UNF to 4-1 victory.
The mentor of UNF, Steve Loeswich was satisfied with his team’s terrific performance. He shared his thoughts after the match, “We were glad to open our home schedule with a solid win today. I'm proud of the way our team played against FAU. We competed and
earned an important victory. Our team loves playing at the Jacksonville Beach courts and we are looking forward to having a tremendous tournament this weekend. We encourage all the Osprey fans to come out and enjoy a great weekend of action.”
UNF is scheduled to host six other collegiate teams for the 2-day UNF Sand Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The Ospreys are enjoying a great form and seem determined to achieve more success in the weekend matches.
