The Ospreys hold off FGCU for 3-2 victory in Sand Volleyball match – Volleyball news
The North Florida women’s sand volleyball team clashed with Florida Gulf Coast squad at the weekend and posted 3-2 victory.
The Dolphin Beach Volleyball Complex provided the backdrop for the match, which covered its length in five flights. The cracking sand volleyball action of UNF and FGCU created a whole lot of entertainment for the fans.
The Ospreys did not have the perfect start in the match as they dropped the opening affair, which featured Medina/A. Budinska of UNF and No. 1 duo of Eagles K. Holm/H. Youngquist.
The match was a close contest from start to end but Eagles eventually attained better status by sending 2-0 (21-19, 21-18) on board. The duo of Medina and Budinska put up a good fight but dropped both sets with narrow margins.
Nonetheless, the No. 2 pair of NFU, E. Strack and C. Jenkins, took sweet revenge from Eagles in the next session. The FGCU was represented by K. Mambuca/O. Mesner. The second flight of the match prolonged to three sets.
Ospreys secured the first set but Eagles tied the game score by winning second set. In the tie break third set, Ospreys displayed better performance and pulled off success. The session concluded with final score of 2-1 (21-12, 20-22, 17-15).
The UNF ladies further extended their lead to 2-1 by winning the third session, when B. Claessens/J. Trembley of UNF posted 2-1 (21-16, 20-22, 17-15) victory over B. Kohler/B. Muse of Eagles. The opening set was dominated by Ospreys but FGCU covered the
deficit in the following set. They forced Ospreys to play third set, which featured a great fight between two sides. Eventually, UNF earned two points advantage and put an end to the tussle.
The Eagles returned in the game in fourth flight. No. 4 W. Masters/J. Hopper of FGCU came hard on UNF’s P. Pridgeon/C. McGuire. The Eagles clean-swept the Ospreys and finished the match with final score of 2-0 (21-15, 21-19). Success of Eagles in fourth
session created the dead-lock of 2-2.
It was an equal opportunity for both sides to clinch success in the final session. However, Ospreys’ N. Baran/A. Shirley led UNF to 2-0 (21-13, 21-16) victory as they downed G. Meyer/L. Childs. Ospreys finished with an overall record of 3-2 and settled for
match victory.
The winning head coach, Steve Loeswick praised the great work of his players. He congratulated for the win and also shared his thoughts after the match.
He said, “I'm just so proud of our entire team. The championship was truly a team effort as we got contributions from all of our pairs and also had tremendous support from all the other players on our team. To be the first team in the country to win a conference
sand volleyball championship is a wonderful accomplishment for our program and UNF as a whole.”
