The Ottawa Senators defeat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-1 – NHL Recap
The Ottawa Senators beat the Atlanta Thrashers 3-1 at the Philips Arena on Thursday. For the Senators, the win was more of a consolation to their disappointing National Hockey League season, as the Thrashers needed a positive result for a possible play-off
cut.
The Senators fought hard throughout the game and were leading at the end of the two periods. They put pressure on the opposing defence and scored two more goals to win the game 3-1 in the end. Bobby Butler, winger of the Senators, was the Star of the Game,
as he scored the second goal.
Despite struggling in the league this season, the Senators started off with flying colours and came up with some absolutely brilliant pieces of play. The Thrashers did not go on the back foot and the game turned into an offensive battle right from the very
first minute of the period.
The Senators, despite being the weaker of the two teams, managed to score in the third minute through Colin Greening’s back-hand shot to get into the lead. The home crowd was silenced as the away side celebrated after scoring.
The Senators tried their best to dominate the game, but the Thrashers with some strong offensive play managed to match them. The puck was seen going up and down the ice, as shots were made on goal from everywhere. The only thing that the period lacked was
goals, as the game play was absolutely brilliant.
The period ended with only one goal scored during the 20 minutes of play, despite the strong plays and several shots. The Senators were leading 1-0 as the teams went into the break. During the course of the period, the Thrashers made 17 goal attempts, as
the Senators managed 11 shots on goal.
The second period lacked energy, as both teams started off on the slow side. Though there were some chances for both teams early on, but the way the chances came for the teams caught them off-guard and they did not score.
The period moved on with both teams getting better and firing shots on goal regularly with the passage of time. Unfortunately, no goals were scored as the period ended with the Senators still leading 1-0. During the second period, the Senators made six goal
attempts, as the Thrashers manage 12.
The final period started off with the Senators exploding at the start, as they scored in the very first minute to double their lead. The goal was scored by Bobby Butler from a quick fired shot.
The Thrashers were able to bag a goal in the seventh minute, which was scored by Dustin Byfuglien from a powerful strike to cut the lead to a single goal. However, this did not help the cause, as the Senators scored in the 12th minute through
Nick Foligno from a simple tip-in shot to regain the two goal advantage.
The Thrashers piled up several shots but they were unable to score any goals, as the period ended with the Senators winning the game 3-1 in the end. During the final 20 minutes of play, the Thrashers made 15 goal attempts, as the Senators managed 10.
