The Outsiders Novel?

Hey I need help on a essay about the Outsiders. It says to "explain the theme of belonging and relate it to the title of the novel". What I don't understand is how is this book about belonging and how does it have anything to do with the title "Outsiders"...please help. This is what I have so far...

"The theme of the Outsiders can be pretty hard to understand because I think that there is actually more than one theme. Though, I do think that the ‘belonging’ theme is the most essential and important one. It shows how these kids and adults want to belong to something and it causes them so much drama and pain and agony. They get into a lot of trouble trying to belong and protect other gang members and make rival members leave them alone. "
