The Owls of Rice University complete the spring exhibition – Volleyball news
The women’s volleyball team of Rice University, which is commonly labelled as the Owls, finished the spring training phase in a great way.
The Owls played quite a few friendly matches with other teams and remained successful. The friendly matches created a perfect opportunity for players to overcome their flaws and sharpen their skills before the start of regular season.
The Rice Owls finished the spring exhibition season by hosting tournament last week. The Owls were joined by teams from Sam Houston, Lamar University, and STORM (ex-college all-stars).
Under the wonderful leadership of head coach Genny Volpe, the Owls worked out great results and did not allow any of the visiting teams to hinder its performance.
At the spring exhibition tournament, Owls played three matches in a best-of-three-sets round-robin and remained undefeated. They took full advantage of the home court and launched power on the guest teams.
In the first match, home heroines cross ways with Sam Houston State ladies. The match continued for three sets and finally the Owls earned better status. They claimed two sets and posted 2-1 win over the competitors.
The Owls carried the momentum going into the next match and defeated STORM in straight sets of 2-0. Next up, the Lamar University squad challenged the Owls in third set. However, the home squad performed better and sent the visitors to loss in two consecutive
sets.
“After a little bit of a slow start we regrouped and ended up having a very strong overall day of volleyball,” said Volpe. “All of our players contributed significantly to our success. We have 11 returning players that have been working hard all spring and
improving. There were times today that I observed a team that can hang with the best teams in the country. I believe our dedication and hard work is paying off, and it was nice to finish the spring season with a tournament victory.”
Following the successful completion of spring exhibition, the team is all set for the summer camp. The 2012 roster of the RU team features 11 letter-winners and five players from the last season. The Owls’ mentor is determined to improve team’s winning record
in 2012 season, while players share the same desire.
