The Paul Reddam owned Cogito aims to land the first Grade 1 victory of his career in the Travers Stakes
Owner Paul Reddam may have been out of luck in the last few weeks, but now he is counting on his European-bred, Cogito, to make a name for himself in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes, which will be hosted at the Spa on 25th August,
2012.
Bred in Virginia by Lazy Lane Farms, Cogito holds an overall record of 2-1-0 in four starts. The young runner has previously competed over 1 ¼ miles, so the familiarity with the distance will definitely work in his favour and bring out the best in
him.
Regarding the son of Giant's Causeway, the owner commented:
"We bought him for $275,000 and a small contingency right after the breeze up sale."
Reddam further told the press that:
"He had some minor issue, like a cough, at that time. He was training right along as a 2-year-old and then we had to stop on him as his ankle was bugging him.”
The bay colt claimed the first two starts of his career with immense ease. On 18th April, 2012, he finished 2 ¾ lengths ahead of, Nine Realms at Newmarket in the Alex Scott Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs.
The sophomore carried the same composure into the Betfair Heron Stakes over 1 mile, where he defeated Sir Henry Cecil trained, Stipulate, by a neck.
Foaled by mare Ladies Cruise, the colt was put to test at Royal Ascot in the 1 mile-Group 1 St James's Palace Stakes, but a step-up in class proved too much to handle, as he finished 8th under, Martin Dwyer.
The colt somewhat recovered in the Group 2 Prix Eugene Adam at Maisons-Laffitte, where he lost the victory by 1 ½ lengths to Bayrir over 1 ¼ miles.
Trained by Brian Meehan, the colt will ride in the capable hands of Joel Rosario. If he steps it up and brings his best to the track, nothing stands between him and victory.
The Reddam owned Handsome Mike, who is trained by Doug O’Neill, failed to fire in the Haskell Invitational, but he will be taking his chances in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park on 18th August
with the hope of some recovery.
