The Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the San Diego Padres 7-4 to clinch series 2-1 - MLB Update
Neil Walker hit an RBI single and Ryan Doumit launched a grand slam in a six-runs third inning as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the San Diego Padres 7-4 at the Petco Park on Wednesday, May 3 to clinch the three-game series 2-1.
The Pirates have achieved their fifth road series win, one more than they won last year. They have also removed the embarrassment of worst 57-105 record they had last year.
After achieving the mile-stone, the Pirates’ new manager Clint Hurdle got excited and he praised the contribution of his roster.
Hurdle said, "There was change over the winter, and I think by the time spring training came, I think they felt, 'We've got a new start. Lessons needed to be learned from taking the whopping that they took last year. In life, you are going to take some whopping.
When you learn from them, they can be productive."
On the other hand, the Padres have become the worst team in Major League Baseball this year with a 5-12 record at home and 12-19 overall. Due to this struggling form, the Padres also lost their nine-game winning streak against the Pirates when they lost
the series-opener on Monday. The Padres’ nine-game winning streak, dating back to 2009 was the longest in team's history against the Pirates.
Padres’ starter, Kevin Correia pitched six innings, gave two runs on five hits, walked two and had three strike-outs to earn his fifth win of the series. He has won all five-road starts this year.
Kevin was pleased after achieving such a performance against his home team that did not extended his contract for this year.
Correia said, "I was fine with it. I mean, they had a good pitching staff. That is kind of, what happened in San Francisco. And that's nice. I got to come over and play with some guys and see some really good pitchers maturing," Correia further added. "They
didn't really need me anymore. That is how baseball is. I'm just glad I got the experience to be able to play in my hometown for a couple of seasons."
The Padres starter, Clayton Richard, gave all seven runs to the Pirates on just four hits including a homer in the third inning. Richard allowed three walks and one earned run while getting four strike-outs in his third loss of the season.
The Padres’ Ryan Ludwick grounded out to third to score the first for the club in the fourth inning, as Brad Hawpe added an RBI single in the seventh. Later in the ninth, Hawpe and Eric Patterson both hit homers, but this contribution was not enough to fix
the damage done by the pitchers.
