  1. It wasn't much of an alignment.  Mars was nearly at 2 Virgo, Saturn was nearly at 5 Virgo and Regulus (no letter "o" in the name) is at 29 Leo and almost at 0 Virgo.

Fixed stars are important in natal astrology and even more important in mundane astrology.  Most astrologers use conjunctions to the star only (no aspects) and a 2 degree or less orb.  Some might not consider Mars and Saturn to be conjunct Regulus because they are not in the same sign.

Regulus is one of the four Royal Stars of Persia and is smack on the ecliptic.  It is associated with kings and rising and falling from power.

Try this website for lots of good information on the stars:

The best book on the fixed stars is still Vivian Robson's "The Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology." Bernadette Brady has resurrected and modified an older method of using the stars which she calls "parans" and her methods can be found in her book "Brady's Book of Fixed Stars."  Robson is more in line with Ptolemy.

Since Mars and Saturn are so far apart in the July 4 chart I wouldn't place much importance on it. Mars - Saturn contacts can be nasty depending on the chart.  I'd use the chart for the time they perfected and compare it to whatever it is I was looking for: a mundane chart or natal chart in order to get a handle on what it might mean.
