Sony Computer Entertainment America boss, Jack Tretton, points out that Sony’s aim has always been to have the best console in the market, regardless of when it is released.
The PlayStation 3 released a full year after its competitor, Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and the delay has cost Sony millions if not billions of Dollars as the PS3 has had to play catch-up with its competition ever since.
Usually, arriving fashionably late to a party gives one plenty of attention, however, with the 360 already set up and delivering content that its rival could not match, Sony found themselves on the back foot.
However, it seems that being the last console to be released in the generation is something that does not bother Sony. SCEA boss, Jack Tretton, explained the ethos behind console development at the consumer electronics giant.
He said, "We've never been first, we've never been cheapest, it's about being best.”
In terms of hardware, it is understood that the PS3 is the more powerful machine when compared with competition with the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Wii. The fact that games such as Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 3 and Uncharted could not be developed on the
360 is a testament to that.
Hinting towards the next-generation, or to be more specific, the PlayStation 4, Tretton continued, "And I think if you can build a better machine and it's going to come out a little bit later, that's better than rushing something to market that's going to
run out of gas for the long-term. I think, ideally, in a perfect world, you want the best machine that ships first, that's cheapest, but the number one goal is to be the best machine and that's what we're always focused on."
Tretton also pointed out that they were not going to abandon the PS3 anytime soon and that they would that the next console would also have the same long-term support that the PlayStation currently enjoys.
The SCEA boss concluded, "In every platform we do, long-term life cycles, diversity and coming up with key franchises that keep people interested in out platform,
