The PlayStation Vita can support multiple PlayStation Network accounts according to Sony
Sony have broken their silence and rubbished reports that their upcoming handheld gaming device, the PlayStation Vita, would only permit one PlayStation Network account to be accessed.
The internet was abuzz with news that was somewhat disappointing to a large number of potential PlayStation Vita consumers. Reports emerged that the Vita would be restricted to only one PlayStation Network account, which meant that only one member of the
family would be able to play online or that everyone would have to share online play by playing through a single account.
The move was made as a precaution by Sony so that gamers could not share their downloads with each other and cheat publishers and developers. Basically, one PSN user could purchase and download a game or add-on on his account and another PSN user with a
different PlayStation 3 could sign in to the same account and download the same content on their console free of cost.
However, Sony have clarified the situation by explaining that the PlayStation Vita will be able to support multiple PSN accounts. There is of course, the usual catch that comes with good news.
While the Vita will not be locked to a single PSN account, PSN accounts will be locked on to memory sticks. This in turn means that each memory stick can only be used by one particular PlayStation Network account to save data and games.
So if a different user wants to sign in and play on the Vita it would be necessary that he or she have a second memory card. It seems to work out nicely for everyone; however, the pricing on the compatible memory cards is rather high.
Some may argue it is a move by Sony to push consumers to purchase more of the consumer electronic company’s first hand products, yet it does make sense when one looks at how it works in terms of security.
The official statement released by Sony was, “Your PSN (PlayStation Network) ID is bonded to your memory card.”
There is an alternative if gamers wish to use more than one PSN account on the Vita though it is quite impractical. It basically involves resetting the console and wiping it clean of all data for which the factory setting restore option can be used.
All in all, it is good news for those consumers who were put off by the recent restricted nature of the PlayStation Vita and while there still may be those who will find something to complain about, the console does seem to have more going for it as opposed
to going against it.
The Vita is set for release later this month in Japan and will be shipped out to other regions for a 2012 release date.
