Sony executive explains that they aim to support the console for “five to ten” years and that a number of first-party developers will be announcing games for it in the future.
The PlayStation Vita is the second generation of handheld portable gaming consoles from the consumer electronics giant, Sony. However, the console has not enjoyed the smoothest of launches as the Vita could not even manage to take the top spot in the hardware
sales charts in Japan in its opening week.
Things went downhill from there as the sales figures for the Vita took a nosedive and have not recovered since. At the same time, Sony is hopeful that the console’s launch in other territories will fare better.
Guy Longworth, the Senior Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment America, is looking to create some hype and develop more interest in the console amongst the gaming community. He explained that a number of Sony’s first-party developers will be working
on releasing titles for the Vita in the future.
He said, “You’ll see a number of games coming out from all out studios.”
As of this moment, Sony currently has Guerrilla Games, Media Molecule, Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica Studios who are responsible for series such as Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted and God of War respectively.
Insomniac Games, which was behind the Resistance series, though are no longer a first-party studio as they decided to go multi-platform.
Mr. Longworth also explained that he saw the Vita being a major player in the console market for the foreseeable future and then some.
He stated, “We see this (PlayStation Vita) as a five to ten year platform, so we’ll judge the success of this in 12, 24, 36 months.” He continued, “We expect to have a great launch, but it’s really in 12 or 24 months we’ll know how successful it has been.”
The executive also stated his objective in terms of what Sony wanted to achieve with the Vita. He said that he wanted to, “establish this (Vita) as the No.1 handheld console in the world. We think it’s the most insane console you can get your hands on.”
