The ‘Pocket Rocket’ fired in Singapore
Robbie McEwen, also nicknamed as the ‘Pocket Rocket’, proved his mettle yet again after his outstanding performance at the OCBC Cycling Criterium. He was delighted after the splendid performance in Singapore.
“I’ve won at least one race in every year in my career and this was a nice race. It was really tough, the roads were wet and a technical, fast course,” he noted.
The 39-year-old started riding professionally in 1996 and is set to retire in May 2012. He started his professional pursuit with Team Rabobank and stayed with the side for a period of four years.
He also rode for Team Domo-Farm Frites (2000-2001), Team Lotto-Adecco (2002-2008), Team Katusha (2009-2010), Team RadioShack (2011) and finally accepted an offer from the Australian side Team GreenEdge for the 2012 season.
Team GreenEdge had an ideal start to its 2012 pursuit. Luke Durbridge helped the side with the first place finish during the Australian Time Trial Championships.
Simon Gerrans marked the biggest victory for the team yet after his marvellous effort to grab the overall spot at the UCI inaugural race, Santos Tour Down Under.
He also succeeded at the Australian Road Race Championships 2012.
McEwen opened his winning account at the Singapore race. He helped the Australian team with yet another win in its debut season at the top level of sport.
Robbie told Cyclingnews, “It’s my first win of the season and first for me at GreenEdge. It’s nice to get win in my last season”.
The Australian briefed that hard work and sincerity to the sport is his recipe of success. He explained that the toughest moment in his life was back in 2009, when he broke his leg.
McEwen stayed out of the sport for most of the 2009 season. He made his comeback in 2010 and still managed to claim the victories.
While commenting about his future plans, he explained, “My next race is going to be the Tour of Turkey. I was scheduled to ride in Belgium towards the end of the month but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen now”.
Tour of Turkey is scheduled in April and Robbie will take some time out before firing his legs at the Turkish race.
