The Prince of Wales awards the ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard with an MBE
Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard was one of the most reliable and well known drivers in the sport during his time with McLaren. David became a part of the sport in 1994 after signing with Williams. The British driver drove for McLaren for 8 years
before joining Red Bull for 4 years. After retiring from the sport in 2008, David Coulthard became a critic of the sport and since then, his opinion about recent events is highly appreciated.
However, David was awarded with an MBE at the Buckingham Palace by the Prince of Wales for a championship running drive for more than a decade in the sport. He became a stalwart of Formula 1 before his retirement but now he is usually seen on BBC as a commentator
of the sport.
Coulthard has 246 race starts with 13 wins and 12 pole positions to his credit. David scored the 2nd place in the drivers’ standings behind Michael Schumacher after scoring 65 points. This was his best season’s result to date.
Along with David Coulthard, the Oscar-nominated actress Sophie Okonedo also received an OBE award from the Prince for her exceptional performances. She was nominated for the best supporting actress category in the 2005 Academy Awards for an outstanding performance
in Hotel Rwanda.
Other than that, one of the Premier League’s most extra ordinary players Gary Speed was also awarded with an MBE for his contribution to the game and as a result, he was named as the new manager for Wales.
Sir Mark Stanhope was made a Knight Grand Cross while Petty Officer Aircrewman Dian Lacy was awarded with the Queen’s Gallantry Medal for his contributions. However, it is quite an honour for a Formula 1 driver to receive this award as it is considered as
one of the most prestigious award in Britain.
