Why do the children of The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) not have titles? Subsequently, why are Queen Elizabeths 3rd and 4th sons a Duke and an Earl, instead of Princes?

  1. With the exception of Wales, there are no principalities in the United Kingdom, so all princes other then the Prince of Wales who have titles are usually given ducal titles.  Her Majesty made an exception by giving her youngest son an earldom rather than a ducal title.  Royal dukes are called His Royal Highness the duke of .....  Princess Anne is Princess Royal.  Her mother was originally Princess Elizabeth of York as her grandfather (that is Queen Elizabeth's father, the future King George) was the Duke of York when she was born.  The children of royal dukes are princess and princesses of the ducal title.

Thus Prince Andrew was Prince Andrew until he was given the title and now can be also called HRH, the Duke of York.

Princess Anne refused to permit her first husband to take a courtesy title.  Had she not, he would have likely received an earldom with a secondary title that would be borne by their first son, the Viscount of X.

  2. When The Princess Anne, Princess Royal married Mark Philips in 1973, The Queen was believed to have offered him a peerage on his wedding day, which he turned down. This may also have been the specific wish of Princess Anne. (As female-line grandchildren of the Sovereign, Princess Anne's children were never eligible for the style "Royal Highness" or the title "Prince/Princess" under the terms of George V's letters patent of 1917). When Peter Philips was born, his parents were said to have refused offers from The Queen that would have led to him being born in the Peerage. As such, Phillips was the first royal baby to be born a commoner, having not even a courtesy style, for more than 500 years. The same situation applied to Zara Phillips when she was born four years later.

Both Lady Louise Windsor and Viscount James Windsor are legally Her Royal Highness Princess Louise of Wessex, and His Royal Highness Prince James of Wessex. As grandchildren of the monarch in the male line, they are legally Royal Highnesses Prince and Princess, and when they come of age, they may legally use the title HRH Princess Louise and HRH Prince James, if they may wish to be titled and styled as such. This is because when their parents married, they decided that their children would be styled as the children of an earl rather than as princes or princesses with the style Royal Highness. This was intended to reduce the burden of royal titles and the responsibility that comes with them. In the absence of letters patent, Lady Louise and Viscount James legally remains a Princess and Prince of the United Kingdom, regardless of how they are styled. Although their last name is Mountbatten-Windsor, both children are styled only using the surname Windsor.

  3. The Princess Royal refused titles for her kids. The Duke of York and Earl of Wessex were born Princes but were given the titles upon their weddings so their wives were a Duchess and Countess rather than Princess. If The Earl of Wessex had not been given his title his wife would have been known as The Princess Edward (taking her husband's first name rather then her own).

  4. Anne didn't want titles given to the children she wanted them to grow up as normal kids,HAHAHAHAHEHEHEHOHOHO,sorry about that, the queens other two parasites are princes but they were given other title so that their wives could have titles and then be able to sponge off the state too.
