The Protest Vendee Pro to return to La Sauzaie as ASP 3-Star event in April – Surfing News
The Protest Vendee Pro will be returning as an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star event to La Sauzaie in France and will run from April 19 – 22, 2012.
The first ASP Europe star-event in the 2012 season is expected to attract a number of local talent as well as foreign surfers to La Sauzaie, which has been serving as host to surfing events for over two decades. The surfing spot is renowned for its potential
to offer good waves and ideal conditions to allow the surfers to display their huge array of technical skills and style, treating the crowd to a heavy dose of thrilling action.
The residents of Vendee are enthusiastic about marine sports, something that makes the region a perfect venue for the surfing competition.
The event official from the local council of Bretignolles-sur-Mer Gilles Rousseau backed the decision to host the ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro at La Sauzaie.
“There has been a surfing competition here at La Sauzaie for more than 25 years now, and a Star event on the ASP Europe Tour for 11 years. It started small to grow as a 4-Star event up until last year,” Rousseau said. “Financial difficulties have set us
back a little bit in 2012 and the Protest Vendee Pro will be an ASP Europe 3-Star event, but we are strongly supporting the event and keeping our long-term goal of making it a major 6-Star event.”
Rousseau further added that the local council is also looking to promote women’s surfing and therefore will once host Breti Girls Pro Junior event that made its debut last year.
The 28-year-old Tim Boal from France is anticipating lots of excitement and intense surfing action during the course of the latest edition of Protest Vendee Pro. He managed to clinch top honours at the event in 2011 and is looking forward to a successful
title defence in April this year.
However, he admitted that a lot would depend on conditions prevailing at the event site during the event. If the tides are really far, then the conditions end up becoming pretty challenging, making it tough for the surfers to collect big scores.
