The Head of State is perfection personified. However as much as I admire and respect our beloved Queen, I wouldn't want to swap places with Her!

I wonder why people keep harping on about the cost of maintaining the Monarchy?

Has anyone ever  thought about the billions of pounds wasted on people scrounging a living off the State? I am not talking about genuinely ill people but the multitudes of free loaders and wasters?

I take it that most people think that this is perfectly acceptable. Oh but of course, it is so easy to target an 80 year old who has worked all Her life for Her Country.

Otherwise I can only add that if we think it's okay to obsessed with an apparent celebrity culture, at least their's is a bit more long-lasting and traditional, and can link us into study of history at all levels.

Sell the Crown jewels / Build a few hospitals and schools ... put the entire royal family on a ship to America ... they then could make a Film " Dumb & Dummer 2 " ... with Bush as lead actor...!!

The Queen is the Head of State, and the Head of the Church. She represents the UK abroad, and she also holds state functions for visiting dignitaries. Basically she is just window dressing, but is good for the country, tourism would fall if we got rid of her.

Having a Constitutional Monarch, the Queen, as head of state, means in effect that no dictator can ever become ruler of UK.

Let me give you an example from Spain of just how a Constitutional Monarch can be most effective.  A few years ago, members of the Civil Guard attempted a coup, a push for power and tried to re-establish a dictatorship in Spain.

They took over the Cortes [Parliament] in Madrid.

HM King Juan Carlos put on a military uniform and went live on TV to speak to the Spanish people.  He told them that he was now in command of the military in Spain and that there would be no dictatorship and that Spanish democracy would be restored.

Meanwhile, the Spanish Communist Party surrounded the Royal Palace in Madrid to guard the King and save him from any potential attack.

The King's action restored democracy in Spain.
