The Red Bull Racing continues on with the battle of words… (Part 1)
The Red Bull team driver, Mark Webber proclaimed that the team would be happier to see the other team driver Sebastian Vettel winning the championship.
Despite of the continuous confirmation from the team management that they value both the driver equally, Webber strongly believes that Vettel has more of an emotional backing from the team as compared to him.
The team has provided the same car to both the drivers. Moreover, it has also proclaimed a large number of times earlier that no team orders would be followed. Yet the Australian driver, only a day before heading for the second last round of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix, talked to the reports saying that it is “obvious” that the German has more emotional backing from the team.
The last race had been a very poor one for the team as both the drivers walked out of the track without having bagged even a single point. Webber slipped off the track during the race owing to which he had to hand over the top place of the Drivers’ Charts to Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. On the other hand, Vettel who was heading for a certain victory in the last race had his engine failed at the final laps. After this disappointing weekend, Weber stands at 2nd place in the tally with his 220 points whereas Vettel has drifted down to 4th place, having 206 points under his belt.
In such a situation, although the chances of Webber seem more obvious than his teammate, yet Red Bull has announced to stay unbiased for any of the drivers. The team Principal Christian Horner announced earlier this week that both the drivers would be given an equal chance to fight, reckoning that the battle is still open for both.
However, Webber, when asked if he thought that the team has more emotional attachment with Vettel he said, “It’s obvious, isn’t it? Of course, when young, new chargers come onto the block, that's where the emotion is. That's the way it is, which is absolutely fine, because I've had a great opportunity with a great car to go and do some great things this year, and I have done that. I've got favourites in life, favourite people I like to be with. That's how it is. It's human nature.”
He was further asked if he thought Red Bull would ask Vettel to support him for the championship, for which he simply replied, “If it hasn’t happened by now, it’s never going to happen. Nothing has changed really between Seb and me for the last five or six races – the only difference now is that there is a different guy leading the championship.”
Moreover, the driver expressed his fear that if both the drivers are given an equal chance to fight that might leave the team deprived of both the championships.
He explained this saying, “Of course you increase the risk of that happening if you race each other and potentially take each other out, or [if you] race as hard as you want all the way to the end then you might not get certain championships. But it’s certainly not my decision – or how I think is not really that important to how we will probably go about it.”
However, while concluding the interview, Webber did admit, that it is very tough no matter what the situation is, to give up your own battle and help your teammate. He very openly confessed that if the situation was reverse he is not sure if he would have wanted to help his team the teammate. “We’re at different parts of our career as well, so it’s not as easy as some might imagine. I'd need to think a lot further about that,” the Australian said.
