The Road Warrior looks to make super middleweight with flying colours
In eight days, Glen "The Road Warrior" Johnson (50-14, 2 KOs) will step into the ring with Allan "Sweetness" Green (29-2, 20 KOs).
Johnson, who was asked to participate in the Super Six tournament following contender Mikkel Kessler’s withdrawal, will be fighting in the super middleweight class for the first time in over a decade. He is, by all accounts, ahead of preparations.
The light heavyweight contender weighed-in at 171 pounds Wednesday, just three pounds shy of the 168 fighting limit.
Johnson and Green will tee off at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, inaugurating the third round of the Super Six tournament.
Both fighters have yet to score a tournament point, as it is Johnson’s first bout, and Green lost a second round fight to WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward.
Johnson explained how he managed dropping the weight, with, "We got a nutritionist who is telling us how to eat, and what we should be eating, and everything has been easy. I feel great about the fight. I am looking forward to it. This is a great opportunity
for me."
The last time Johnson made the 168 pound limit, he knocked out Toks Owoh in six rounds during their IBF Inter-Continental super middleweight fight. That was in 2000, with Johnson weighing in at 166.25 pounds.
Lou Dibella, who promotes Johnson, said, "For anyone concerned that Glen Johnson would have a weight problem, he weighed 171 over a week before the fight. Most super middleweights would weigh more. Glen is a true professional, and he dropped the weight
like a true professional. Two super middleweights will get in the ring on November 6 in a high stakes battle."
Johnson is coming off a narrow decision-loss to IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud. The fight saw both men slugging it out and fighting fairly, with Cloud showcasing his youth by out-hustling Johnson and landing the more meaningful shots.
