  1. Dark and light is determined by elemental composition.  Iron-heavy is going to be darker in color.  Also, in terms of igneous rocks, the darker the color the more basaltic it is (formed from lava).  The lighter the color the more granitic it is (formed from magma).

    The more silica, the more explosive and a faster viscosity (in igneous rocks).  In general, it means more volcanic in origin.
