The Roger Varian trained Nahrain – early success and recent setbacks
With four consecutive victories in the beginning of her career, Nahrain was hard to miss and gained a significant amount of interest and attention.
Trained by Roger Varian for owner, Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, the runner was making quick progress and became the star of Varian’s stable.
Whelped on 29th January, 2008, the filly’s three-year-old campaign was a success story. The daughter of Selkirk broke her maiden in the Spiffing Crabbie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Windsor in May, 2012
over 1 mile and ½ furlongs, where she was mounted by Neil Callan, and defeated the Mahmood Al Zarooni trained, Paoletta.
After that, the chestnut filly continued her winning streak and landed the 1 mile Rewards4racing.com Handicap at Haydock on 9th June, 2011.
There she raced as a favourite and justified it when she defeated the Mark Brisbourne trained, Belle Royale, while the third place was secured by Weapon Of Choice.
Foaled by Generous mare Bahr, she raced as a favourite and won the 1 mile Coral Distaff at Sandown.
Her first Group 1 victory came in the Qatar Prix De L'Opera at Longchamp, where she narrowly claimed the £172,405.17 prize by finishing a nose ahead of the A. Fabre trained, Announce, who raced as a favourite.
That was the last of her winning streak. The filly made a trip to the United States in November, 2011, and finished as a runner-up to Perfect Shirl by ¾ of a length in the Grade 1 Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Churchill Downs
over the course of 1 mile and 3 furlongs.
After that her luck went sour, and she could not make an impact in her seasonal debut when she returned.
With rider Neil Callan on her back, Nahrain finished ninth in the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes at Ascot on 20th June, 2012, over 1 mile.
She failed to live up to expectations and lost the victory by 7 ¾ lengths.
The four-year-old is now scheduled to compete in the Group 1 Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes at Goodwood on 4th August, 2012, where she will try to redeem herself over the course of 1 mile, 1 furlong and 192 yards.
