No,what has climbing a mountain got to do with an appearance by royalty at his funeral?Knights of the realm die every day and some of them have done far,far more for humanity than Sir Ed,just what was so special about this one that would make even a a very minor royal,right on the fringes of royalty,attend?

The calender for the Royal Family is scheduled months ahead...maybe it is because they have other commitments that they cannot attend his funeral...

Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary will be honoured at a special memorial service at Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace has announced.

The Queen has offered the Hillary family a memorial service at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, on a date to be fixed in April.

As Sir Edmund was a Knight of the Garter, the ceremony will include the "laying up" of his banner in the chapel.

The family will also be invited to attend an audience with the Queen after the service.

The Queen will be represented by the Governor-General of New Zealand, Anand Satyanand, at Sir Edmund's state funeral in Auckland next Tuesday.

A personal wreath from the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be laid at the lying-in-state before the state funeral in New Zealand.

The Queen sent a personal message to the family of Sir Edmund after his death at the age of 88 last Friday, and said she was "deeply saddened" at the news.

Sir Edmund's ascent of Everest was announced on the eve of the coronation in June 1953, and he was knighted in the same year.

The Queen met Sir Edmund on a number of occasions, the last being the Garter ceremony in Windsor in 2004.
