The Ryder Cup 2012: Maria Hjorth speaks her mind
The Ryder Cup 2012, which saw European stars trample their long-time American foes in grand style, gripped just about everyone’s attention — and Swedish Maria Hjorth was no exception to this.
Hjorth, who spends most of her time playing on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and European Ladies Tour (LET), took the time to watch the 2012 Ryder Cup.
She saw her favourite players show their skills on the course with interest, and appreciated Europeans for their success.
Ryder Cup, the most prestigious tournament on the PGA (Professional Golf Association) Tour, is often compared to the Solheim Cup — a
women’s event with a stunning track record.
European female gofers outplayed their American rivals in the 2011 Solheim Cup, bringing the number of their victories to four.
Hjorth, who has been regarded as one of the star performers in the Solheim Cup, displayed a stunning performance in the 2011 edition and troubled American foes with the help of perfect putts
and swing.
Hjorth recently talked to the media about how she compares the European women’s success in the Solheim Cup 2011 to the Ryder Cup 2012 that saw fellow male stars steal the show.
The Swedish golfer said since Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup have several things in common, the level of competition is usually high and it typically grips fans’ attention till the final moments.
She said that watching her fellow Europeans prove their mettle at the 2012 Ryder Cup reminded her of the 2011 Solheim Cup, as they also maintained the upper hand till the hole.
“You could feel there were few things changing like it happened to us on last few groups and last few holes....like it happened there and they won so many of the matches on 17th
and 18th hole. It was amazing! Just like the Solheim Cup,” Hjorth said.
Same was the case with the Ryder Cup, held at Medinah Country Club, Illinois, United States, as Europeans ramped up pressure on American stars on the last two holes, winning the event in a
resounding fashion.
Hjorth said that she is happy that the Ryder Cup is back in Europe, and it will definitely make female golfers, both on the LPGA and LET, want to improve their game and make another breakthrough
in the 2013 Solheim Cup, slated to be held at Colorado Golf Club, United States.
Hjorth said that Europeans have gradually put themselves in a position where they can play a more natural game than ever before.
The LET star went on to say if players can put their trust in themselves, they can make things happen more easily.
When asked what helped Europeans shine at Medinah, Hjorth said: “I think they just had a lot of believe in themselves. Last two matches on Saturday, before they finished was a huge difference....they
could be down even more. I thought this was a little bit of more extra energy for them...Just believe in themselves and never give up. Everyone was so good and no mistakes”.
