I have to answer questions on Nathaniel Hawthorne's Custom House introduction. I have answered all but this one: Detail why Hawthorne believes his ancestors would disapprove of him. All I've found is that they find it foolish and immoral? Is that right? Can you add anything? Thank you!

  1. Our teacher let us skip that part: she just said all we needed to know was that he put it in there to show the time period he grew up and wrote in.

If I would say, yes. He grew up in Puritan society, and A) writing books about sinful stuff was imorral, and B) they believed in the value of hard work.

So, that's all I can give you. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
