The Seattle Mariners defeat the Detroit Tigers 13-3 – MLB Update
The American League’s Seattle Mariners comprehensively beat the Detroit Tigers 13-3 to tie the three game series on Tuesday night at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington.
The Mariners made a dream start of the outing, with starter Doug Fister getting two strike-outs and batters piling up four runs in the first inning. It turned the game completely into the Mariners’ favour as Fister made a career high seven strike-outs in
six innings. On the other side, the Tigers’ pitchers allowed eleven walks of whom the Mariners’ batters took full advantage.
Fister performance pleased Seattle’s manager Eric Wedge as he said, "Fister has thrown the ball well all year. It was good we could jump out early and he did a great job of keeping the same mindset you have to have when you go out there and you are a starting
pitcher in that type of game."
The Tigers allowed a walk to Jack Cust in the first inning that set the momentum for Mariners. Brendan Ryan touched his first run with the bat and added an RBI single followed by Chris Gimenez’s RBI double taking the score to 4-0.
The Tigers’ starter Phil Coke tossed two scoreless innings, but could not carry this performance to fourth inning in which he again went for two runs, as the lead had moved to 6-1.
The Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland was not happy with Coke. "He didn't have any command of his fastball. He didn't have command of the strike zone," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "We didn't all night."
The Tigers’ closers Alberto Alburquerque and Brad Thomas played their worst outing of the season. Alberto allowed two runs and one walk while Thomas consumed five runs on seven hits. Gonzalez, Alberto and Thomas combined to grant nine hits and seven walks.
The Mariners, however, were not ready to restrict their bat. Ichiro Suzuki, who played 209 consecutive Major League Baseball games, swung his bat and made an RBI single to start a five-run seventh inning. Chone Figgins got his first hit of the season, as
Michael Bradley and Miguel Olivo carried the lead to 11-2.
The Tigers’ first-baseman Miguel Cabrera scored an RBI double trimming the lead to 11-3. However, it was the Tigers’ day, as in the eighth inning Ichiro Suzuki added another RBI and Lance Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to take the score to 13-3 where it remained.
