Question:

The Self: the dominant ideology on GWS?

I asked a question a few days ago about the dominant ideology on GWS and got some really good answers and some predictable ones.

One poster wrote 'the self', and got the best answer because it rang true. It was cause for introspection (ironically) and I came to the conclusion that much of my activity on this forum is obviously self-indulgent.

Some posters view this forum as entertainment only, whereas others are here to learn and contribute and still others a combination.

At large, in the world, are we as a people to pre-occupied with ourselves? What if everyone on Earth, suddenly became concerned for everyone else, before themselves? What would happen, I wonder, if we forgot ourselves?

  1. People would actually be happy!

  2. It would probably be very difficult to live if everyone forced consideration, it simply goes against the desire for self-preservation seemingly built into us. It is overridden at certain times of crisis, but only when the issue at hand and the goals are shared and those goals are broad. How we have evolved is likely behind how we think and only having access to your own thoughts causes psychological self interest.

Despite this It wouldn't be too difficult to at least exercise consideration and accept that we as individuals are not the only ones on the planet, we lack even that most of the time.

  3. Of course, mi amigo.

I live for others, but really, I only live for others to make me feel good about myself.  It makes me happy. So even though it is considered a selfless act, it really is selfish.  The same could be said about anything that humans do though.

  4. change is good ;)

and since when is educating oneself not entertaining?

  5. "What if everyone on Earth, suddenly became concerned for everyone else, before themselves?"

I think I like Axn with his rants were only a few line long.
