So I went to check what the postage would cost for an item. I typed in weight and dementions on ebay shipping check it said twelve dollars there but when i went to the post office they said it cost 17. Is it cool to ask the buyer for the difference?

  1. Cool or not, who cares.  It bothers you.  Contact customer service in ebay and ask them what happened.  It might have been a electronic glitch when you were posting the information,  At least you will know for next time what to do.  Ask at the post office about shipping.

  2. It is very uncool.   If you put a specific amount for shipping on the listing,  and the buyer bid and won... and has paid,  then you have a contractural obligation to sell the item and deliver it for the listed price.   It's also not wise to s***w up your seller feedback for $5, when the buyer has acted in good faith.   Best bet is to ship the item quickly and send the buyer an email explaining that although you underestimated the shipping, you're a great guy and so honest that you are happy to send it at the original quoted bid and shipping cost.   Don't ask for more cash,  he may send it anyway.    You'll end up with a very positive feedback and a happy buyer, which in the long run will be worth more to your business than the $5.   Next time, do the homework and quote accurate shipping.

  3. I agree with the other answers.  You should not ask for more postage, you just have to take the loss.  Next time be sure you are accurate on the postage or even overestimate a little bit and if it costs less refund the buyer.  I've done that a few times, I've also had to eat it on shipping costs before.

  4. No - I don't think the buyer would pay it.  They honored your "contract" - you posted the price of the item and how much the total cost would be and that's what they paid.  Sorry - I'm sure you're bummed.
