Will give you some information. Although I know wikipedia isn't the most reliable. But at the moment both sides are speculating who and what they have downed/killed.

And use this made up information as propaganda.

I also got this from CNN.com:

He said Georgian troops had downed "18 or 19" Russian warplanes and killed hundreds of Russian troops.

Saakashvili said Russia had 500 tanks and 25,000 troops inside Georgia. A Russian defense ministry said only four planes had been lost.

3 fighters SU-25, and 1 bomber TU-22. Thats all. Not 4000 aircrafts being hit.

Georgian Defense Forces Had Strong Land-to-Air missile system .. at the begun they doesn't want to use it ( I'd guess they doesn't want to pissed off the russian bear ) but when they saw russian bear doesn't want to stop at border line .. they prefer keep the fight, they pull the triggers. Russians loose the airplanes .. also georgians had some anti-tank missiles too ( they doesn't start to use those .. not yet ) if russians keep  pushing they loose more and more tanks too.

Russia may claim higher losses than actual, to give them a license to take over Georgia
