The Spanish Open: Simon Dyson shoots 71 in first round
Simon Dyson scored a 1-under 71 in the first round of the Spanish Open on Thursday.
The 34-year-old English golfer shot four impressive birdies on the 4th, 8th, 11th and 16th hole. He played an average game under the tough weather conditions at the Real Club de Golf de Sevilla in Seville, Spain.
He started the round with a bogey, but improved his strokes from the second hole, scoring two consecutive pars. Sfter making his fist birdie on the 4th hole, he carded three more pars and started chasing the leading position.
Then he made another birdie on the 8th hole and ended the front nine holes by making 35 out of 36. After a short break, he returned to the course and started the back nine holes at par.
He shot a long yard birdie on the 11th hole. After making two consecutive pars, he carded another bogey on the 14th hole.
Dyson continued an average performance and scored one birdie and bogey. His scored took him beyond the top-10 players and he finished the tournament on the 11th leaderboard position.
Shaun Micheel is the current leader of the first round. He is playing his game with a new putter and hoping to end his nine-year victory drought in Spain.
He scored a 5-under 67 and reached the top of the leaderboard. He is one stroke ahead of the three runners-up and has a three-stroke lead over Ethenglish Dyson.
"It was just a battle of attrition out there today," Micheel said. I played in the pro-am Wednesday and couldn't manage one birdie so I changed my putter to an Odyssey XG-7 centre shaft and managed to hole eight birdies today”.
He added: "It's the first time in two years I've tried a new putter and I also put the ball more forward in my stance to get more loft and the combination seemed to work well".
Dyson won two European Tour events in 2011. In the current year, he is not scoring well and has not finished any tournament in the top 10.
The Spanish Open gives him a great chance to be impressive throughout four days and record his first victory in the current year.
