The Street League Skateboarding tour: The second season
The Street League Skateboarding tour is returning back to the USA this summer for its second season! The tour will consist of three stops and a final championship event. Boasting a prize of $1.6 million, this season is expected to deliver more excitement
than last year and promises to be a memorable experience for both the competing riders and the fans of skateboarding alike.
The Street League features 24 of the world’s top street skateboarders in pursuit of a portion of the prize purse as well as the championship title. The riders get a chance to compete against the best and prove themselves in front of a massive crowd, as an
even larger audience catching every second of the action on their television sets.
The first stop of this year’s Street League will kick off on 7 May at Key Arena in Seattle. The tour will then move to its second stop that will be at Sprint Centre in Kansas City on 11 June. The third stop of this season will take place on 16 July at the
Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The winner at each stop will be taking home a big slice of the $1.6 million prize.
To add to the excitement and increase the buzzer-beater moments through the season, the second edition of Street League will introduce section elimination during the finals of each event. The final will be comprised of three sections with the first section
starting off with 10 riders. At the end of each section, the two riders with the lowest scores will be eliminated from the competition, reducing the field from ten to six for the final big section at each event. This section format will in effect create a
down-to-last-trick excitement at each section.
A huge deviation from last season, the 2011 Street League championship title will not be awarded to the rider with the maximum points accrued at the first three stops of the tour. Instead, the top ten Street League pros will be competing at a one-day-winner-takes-all
championship at Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey, on 28 August.
This final event will feature 10 riders competing for the biggest prize on offer in skateboarding history, $200,000, along with the Street League championship ring and watch. Winners at the first three stops will be included in the 10 riders taking part
in the final championship battle. The remaining seven championship contenders will be determined by overall ranking.
Talking about this years’ season, the 20-year professional skateboarder and entrepreneur, Rob Dyrdek, claimed that, “Not only are we creating the most thrilling championship finale in skateboarding history, but with the addition of elimination we are bringing
that ISX buzzer beating moment to every section of the Finals. The results will be historical.”
2010’s Street League Skateboarding tour offered a historical climax at each event, as Nvjah Huston, Sean Malti and Shane O’Neill, all secured the first place honours and the $150,000 prize money with their final trick. The 15-year-old Huston was crowned
the overall Street League champion after his consistent performance throughout the season.
"The most exciting thing about last season was the true buzzer-beater moments created by the trick-for-trick scoring," says Street League founder Rob Dyrdek. "It was excitement we've never seen in skateboarding and it was pure to sports.”
Delivering the highest attendance in street skateboarding history and receiving more than 2 million viewers domestically, with international distribution in more than 198 counties, Street League was undoubtedly a huge success in its’ inaugural year. Similar,
if not higher, response is expected from the fans this year as the tour kicks off with new additions and features that will be making the competition more intense and exciting.
