The Summer Stakes at Woodbine draws a field of eight as Todd Pletcher comes back to haunt the challengers
The $250,000 Summer Stakes at Woodbine racecourse on 17 September has so far reeled an outstanding lot of juvenile runners, eight in total. The race has attracted trainer Todd Pletcher, who won the 2010 edition of the Summer Stakes with his brilliant colt,
Pluck.
Todd Pletcher will be looking for a repeat in the Summer Stakes, but this time around with his fiery 2-year-old colt, Finale, who after two poor starts has come to his own.
Winning his maiden special weight race in his third attempt at Belmont Park on 15 July, 2011, on turf, the colt immediately captured the Continental Mile at Monmouth Park on 20 August, 2011.
Pluck, who went on to win the Summer Stakes last season, also went on to land the Grade 2 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, as the winner of the Summer Stakes receives a fee-paid berth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
On the other hand, trainer Sid Attard has deployed his two 2-year-old colts, increasing his chances two times to win the Summer Stakes.
Jomelo, the son of Giacomo, broke his maiden in is second attempt at Woodbine racecourse on 4 August, 2011, covering the distance of 6 furlongs in 1 minute and 11.15 seconds on grass.
The colt rolled in 2nd in his first maiden’s race and then Sid Attard sent him to run in the Clarendon over Woodbine’s synthetic surface.
Jomelo couldn’t win it but finished on the money as he came in third behind Making Amends and Jenna’s Wabbit.
The Norseman Racing Stable owned Maritimer broke his maiden in his first attempt, but since then, has been a little unlucky with his finishing as he rolled in second in the Vandal at Woodbine and again second in a one mile allowance race at Woodbine grass
course on 26 August, 2011.
The rest of the field consists of M. Doyle trained Secret Consultant, Steve Asmussen’s Daddy Nose Best, Excaper, Burn the Mortgage and M. Casse conditioned Making Amends, who Jomelo will be sizing up as he was defeated by Making Amends in the Clarendon.
