  1. I've never read Eragon, but have read the entire Shannara series.

I believe Eragon is simply a novelization of the Movie and not "really" a novel.

The Shannara series is very derivative of the Lord of the Rings and was written over 25 years ago, starting in 1977.

It is not as complex as Tolkein. They are pretty good books. Nothing compares to the Lord of the Rings, though.

There was one other series of novels written in the "Rings" tradition about the same time as "Shannara" that was much better, but the author and titles escape my memory. I haven't read either of them since the early 80's.

Go ahead and read the Shannara series, it won't hurt you, and is fairly entertaining.

If you read Tolkein first, you'll be spoiled, and all the other books will seem pale in comparison.

P.S. I'm NOT a "Lord of the Rings" geek.

But of the over 3000 books I've read, "Rings" is way up there in quality.
