The Tampa Bay Rays humiliate the Boston Red Sox 16-5 – MLB Update
The American League eastern franchise Tampa Bay Rays succeeded in splintering an eight-game losing streak by crushing division rivals Boston Red Sox 16-5 in their Major League Baseball regular season outing on Monday at Fenway Park in Boston.
Jeremy Damon led off the game with an impressive grand slam to centre field in the top of the first inning followed by Sam Fuld, who went 4 for 6 with a two run homer in the second inning taking the lead to 7-0. The momentum created allowed all the sluggers,
who came to bat after the second inning, to make at least one hit except for first baseman Dan Johnson and third baseman Sean Rodriguez.
Johnson and Rodriguez remained unfortunate as they were unable to score in their combined five at-bats. However, it was not the case with second baseman Ben Zobrist and centre-fielder Upton as both impressed with their impressive slugging techniques.
Zobrist opened his account with a beautiful swing for a double in the top of the sixth inning then added two more hits in the later part of the game. Upton, who has .571 slugging averages, blistered three splendid hits that earned three runs for the Club.
Boston’s starter Daisuke Matsuzaka went for his worst start in 2011 season, allowing seven runs in two innings and struck-out just two batters. Tim Wakefield, who relieved Matsuzaka in the second inning, pitched a scoreless third but could not stop the storming
batting line-up of the Rays and received five runs on seven hits in the next two innings.
Reliever Alfredo Aceves succeeded in restricting the Rays’ batters, as he tossed two hit-less innings, and struck out two batters. However, the game was bad for pitchers, but it was nightmare for closer Dan Wheeler, who permitted four runs on five hits in
just one inning.
The Rays’ starter, Jeremy Hellickson, pitched five innings, allowed just two runs and five walks while striking out one batter. Reliever Adam Russell, Joel Peralta and Kyle Farnsworth went for one run each in their spells.
Boston started a solid chase when Adam Gonzalez chipped an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, but could not post considerable runs on board. Jacoby Ellsbury, playing as a designated hitter launched a huge homer to right field off Peralta in the
bottom of the eighth inning.
