The Tell All Tiger
Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘Hate the sin, love the sinner.’ This apothegm has been used widely, most recently by rap artists and redubbed as ‘Don’t hate the playa, hate the game.’ Seeing how Tiger Woods is going, it won’t be long before we see him in a rap music video repeating those lines. That’s expected since the former World Number One is giving statements somewhere along those lines.
The sport that made him a celebrity and a symbol worldwide is being ridiculed by none other than the star himself. It’s a surprise that the 14 time major Championship winner is criticising and blaming golf for his actions and the way he is. Ever since Woods his divorce, he has finally come out in the open and talked to the media.
In a personal account Woods gave to Newsweek, Woods talked about his mistakes, the affairs he kept from his wife and hurting the people he cared about the most. Calling golf a self-centered game, Woods said “That self-reliance made me think I could tackle the world by myself.” He even went to say that golf turned him into a ‘filthy s*x addict.’ Many would think it to be passing the buck for Woods to be blaming golf for his ‘habits’.
Woods even mentioned opportunists who were trying to cash in on his troubles. Obviously, he meant the girls or mistresses that came clean about their affair with Woods. Even though the cuts and bruises from the car crash have healed, Woods said that it’s the pain in his soul that’s more complex and unsettling.
Tiger Woods was divorced by wife Elin Nordegren on August 23rd this year and it has been reported that Tiger gave around $110 million in the settlement. Since Elin found out about his infidelity, the couple did try to work things out and went into counseling, but their ‘differences’ were ‘irreconcilable’.
In his statement, he expressed his deepest feelings. He talked about his children and how he cherishes their smiles more than the trophies he has won. Woods also agreed that he needs to accept his mistakes and take control of the situation.
“I can never truly repair the damage I've done...But I can keep trying,” said Woods. From the looks of it, it appears that the golf legend is very sorry and regretting all that he’s done. Even though things aren’t the way he wants them to be, he still says that the scandal was the best thing that happened to him.
He said with everything coming out in the open, it is the only way he can rebuild his image and discover who he is. Tiger accepted he was doing things he shouldn’t have otherwise been doing. Now with all the damage done, he is clear about who he is and where he wants to go.
Another new thing coming from the ex-top cat of golf was that he finally decided to get on to Twitter. Woods tweeted “What’s up everyone. Finally decided to try out twitter. Yep, it’s me. I think I like this twitter thing. You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the love.”
It is a fact that 2010 was the worst year in Tiger Wood’s Career. It is the first time in his professional career that Woods hasn’t won a title. He also posted his career worst score when he shot an 18 over and came 78th out of 80 at the Bridgestone Invitational this August. Not only is he winless, he also lost his rank that was his for five years. Tiger, who was ranked No.1 in the World Rankings, was dethroned by the European Lee Westwood at the end of October.
With The Chevron World Challenge taking place next month, Tiger Woods has one last chance to end this year on a good note. Tiger is hoping to play well and at least win something in 2010.
