Being relativly new at this sport, are there other horses as old as Tin Man that still perform as well as he did yesterday?

  1. John Henry was good! Funny Cide (2003 Kentucky Derby winner) is currently 7 years old but he does not race as well as he did when he was younger.

  2. the tin man is just a tough customer regardless of his age, when he fires, he is tough to beat, john Henry was a world beater on grass and dirt....

  3. I don't think so.  With so much money to be made as a stallion, only geldings are racing in graded stakes company much past 4 or 5.  The Tin Man is only the 3rd 9 year old ever to win a G1 race in the US.

Lava Man is another great older horse but he's younger (only 6) by comparison.

Dreadnaught is 7, but he's not winning graded stakes, but he does hit the board often.

Anyway, the recent trend towards early retirement has really weakened the older horse divisions (older male and distaff).

  4. John Henry was that good, but currently no, there is nothing like him.

  5. John Henry was the last 9 year old to win a grade I event, and that was 23 years ago.  As far as the jibe about California's turf division, last time I checked Arlington Park was in Illinois, and The Tin Man won there less than a full year ago.

  6. That sure was an impressive race, a 9 year old winning a Grade 1 stakes after an 8 month lay off. I don't know of any other horses like him.

  7. I am pretty sure that John Henry won the Arlington Million as a 9 year old. Actually I think it shows that the Turf Mile division in California is fairly weak as The Tin Man is not a typical mile horse.
