Let (x+12) = the number of Democrats in the Senate, since there are 12 more Democrats than Republicans.

And since there's a total of 100 members, set the sum of Republicans and Democrats equal to 100.

so basically, x + x + 12 = 100.

Once you solve for x, that's the number of Republicans in the Senate. Add 12 and you have the number of Democrats.
