  1. By getting involved in a war. the DOD buys stuff.

  2. Depends on when your starting point is...

    Since WWII, our military budget has constantly increased.  Today we are spending over $500 billion annually, much more than any other nation.

    I wouldn't say military spending is a way to "mobilize for war", but it is obviously a factor that points out the importance of a strong military to the U.S. economy.  Security and stability are the prime objectives in favor of world markets that aren't disturbed.

  3. Currently?

    It [the gov] didn't. To top it off we got (or getting) those silly little refund checks that cost the gov a horrid mess of overhead in extra $$$ and didn't mean a thing.

    That's why it [the economy] sucks and is gonna be a monster mess for quite awhile.

    Don't even get into the long-term ramifications of what's up...

    Shouldn't this be in HW?

  4. war economy is a false idea.

    war productivity, simply takes away from another area of productivity. we dont gain magical workers or fully automated robots, we take workers from other fields. This drives up costs in some areas.

    Also, military materials are purchased by taxpayers in the form of debt, at many times cost. Every 20 million dollar plane costs 40 million in taxes.

  5. During WW2, the last time we really mobilized for war, the government:

    Drafted pretty much every able bodied man;

    converted domestic production resources to war production, every car plant in Detroit stopped making cars and started making tanks, planes, trucks etc;

    raised tax rates on ordinary income so that the top rate was about 95%!!;

    raised tax rates on capital gains in a similar manner;

    imposed rationing on all manner of consumer goods;

    went deeply into deficit spending;

    mobilized Hollywood as its propaganda arm.
