In the last couple of years, the BBC has been making a lot of noise about the supposed "human rights/political freedoms/genocide" issues in Africa, specifically Zimbabwe and Darfur.
Considering Africa has always been practically made of failed states, a cynical/realist world-view tells me that this abrupt outburst of "concern" about these issues is merely a smokescreen for the UK's own national interests.
I consider myself to be relatively well-informed about world affairs - but I cannot decipher what are the UK's true interests in states like Sudan and Zimbabwe. Obviously direct re-colonization is not possible so we can rule that out.
Can someone offer some realistic suggestions? What does the UK potentially gain from toppling the current governments in Sudan or Zimbabwe?
