The UK’s Love Affair with WAGs
A wag or a wife and a girlfriend of a footballer are women in the British society known for doing nothing. These women, who are usually very good looking, get media coverage and some serious attention just because they are married or dating a footballer. It seems as if being married to someone who is famous automatically makes you famous as well; it’s like being famous by default.
Paris Hilton is the queen of being famous by default; she is famous just for being rich and going to lots of parties. That’s all. Wags are the same things only they are the British versions of Paris Hilton. Society has fallen to new lows when a woman is envied just because she is married to someone famous and looks good doing it. That is basically what they do and what they are good at; looking good while being married. They would just be good looking women if they weren’t married to a famous footballer.
Once they get married to a famous footballer their lives are set up pretty much for ever after that. They don’t need to work, they don’t need to do anything really because the millions that their husbands bring in pretty much cover every expense they could have. Magazines love them too, every week in trashy gossip magazines, a wag will be sprawled out on the cover wearing not too much while the cover story is about how she found out her husband was having an affair but forgave him and everything worked out in the end. Of course it worked out in the end, firstly because most of these stories are purely made up and secondly because she is not about to let this golden ticket get away from her no matter how many times he cheats.
As you may have noticed I’m not the biggest fan of wags. I hate people who leech off of others and get everything they want in life just because they happened to be good looking and married the right guy. But I will say this about some of them; they know how to get ahead in life and that is admirable, how they do it is beside the point but they still doing. One of the most famous Wags in the UK has to be Victoria Beckam. All right I’ll concede the fact that she was famous before she married wonder boy Beckham but again smart lady and smart move on her part. She saw her career was nose diving and so grabbed hold of a guy who she figured probably would do well for himself for some time to come and so she has it made. Brilliant strategy, she took a gamble on big Becks and it all turned out all right for her. Another very famous Wag is (or should I say was now that she is divorced) Cheryl Cole, one time wife of Ashley Cole. The thing about Cheryl that is a bit different to other Wags is that she was very famous independently of the footballer she married and after leaving him she continues to be very famous.
So maybe if all Wags learnt a lesson from her we might be in a better position. But maybe it is human nature to try and better ourselves any way we can. So can we really blame these ladies, who usually come from normal and average circumstances and manage to elevate themselves in society’s eyes? Maybe the manner in which they do it retards women’s rights development by many years but on the other hand who are we to say whom a woman should marry. It should be her choice and she has every right to do so. It doesn’t mean we have to like them while they do it though, that is our choice in the matter.
