  1. The debt was mostly borrowed from China. Smaller portions of it was borrowed from Saudi Arabia and Japan.

  2. We are in debt to foreign governments and the central banks that comprise the Federal Reserve.  Banks create money out of nothing and then charge us interest on it.  It is crazy.

  3. Ourselves

  4. The biggest proportion, by far, is to China, also quite a bit to Saudi Arabia.

  5. ABSOLUTELY NO ONE !

When your debt hits those levels you don't owe the lenders  and they are basically at your mercy.

Once you exceed like 9 zeros it's usually handled with a sharp pencil

since nothing of  intrinsic value was exchanged.

    Debt is written off everyday

Short answer in real time economics

  6. The country is indebted to the lenders.  They are too numerous to list but are the folks who've bought the bonds.
