The US govenment is in debt for several hundred trillion dollars. To whom are we indebted?

The debt was mostly borrowed from China. Smaller portions of it was borrowed from Saudi Arabia and Japan.

We are in debt to foreign governments and the central banks that comprise the Federal Reserve.  Banks create money out of nothing and then charge us interest on it.  It is crazy.

When your debt hits those levels you don't owe the lenders  and they are basically at your mercy.

Once you exceed like 9 zeros it's usually handled with a sharp pencil

since nothing of  intrinsic value was exchanged.
