The Uglies - I need help and QUICK!?

Ok, me being stupid this summer, did not read my dumb summer reading book : The Uglies.

School starts Tuesday, and we have to participate in a discussion, and do a project.

Can anyone give me a quick overview? Main events? Important characters? Anything important I need to know?

main characters, Tally, Shay, David. its in Tally's POV

Tally is an ugly and on your 16th birthday instead of getting a licnese you get a surgery that makes your unbearably pretty. Then you get to go across the river to New Pretty Town, where you party all night. Tally sneaks out one night to meet her friend Peris, who has become a pretty already. Then she meets shay. Shay is an ugly just like her, but shay doesn't want to become pretty. she claims that when you get the surgery to make you pretty, they do something to your brain and make you forget a lot of things. Shay wants to run away to a place call the New Smoke. it's where you stay ugly all the time. Tally becomes fast friends with Shay, but doesn't want to stay ugly forever. She wants to be pretty. Shay escapes and gives Tally directions to the new smoke, but they are all pieced together in ways that only Tally would understand. A lady named Dr. Cable comes to Tally knowing she knows where Shay is. Dr. Cable threatens to keep

Tally ugly if she doesn't go get Shay. Tally doesn't want to hurt her friend, but she must because she wants to be pretty so much. Dr Cable give Tally a locket and when Tally gets to the New Smoke she is supposed to trigger the tracking device. When she gets there she finds Shay and tells her to come back, but Shay likes it at the New Smoke. She even has a new boyfriend named David, his parents organized the New Smoke. David quickly falls for Tally and Tally falls for him. she even likes it at the New Smoke. She destroys the tracking device, but since it was damaged, it was triggered. Dr. Cable comes to get Tally and Shay, but they don't want to go. Dr. Cable catches Shay, but not Tally. Davids dad dies in the attack Dr. Cable led. Tally decides to go back to get Shay and save her, but she fails and is turned into a pretty.

EDIT: no she doesn't fail i just remembered. she agrees to turn pretty and get shay back. when she turns pretty she will get pills to take and make her brain clear again. she promises to do it. THE END :]

Although not doing your work is bad, I can understand that you put it off. Tally Youngblood is turning 16 soon, which means she has to go through surgery to make herself extremely beautiful. Her friend Shay has the same birthday as her, so she is scheduled to go through surgery also. The story revolves around Shay going to the Smoke. The Smoke is a place where people run away because they don't want to be beautiful. When Tally hears her friend is going to the Smoke, she tells the authorities, and becomes a spy. When she arrives at the smoke, she discovers a secret. The surgery makes people stupid. It is a solution to war. With stupid people, there can be no conflict. Tally discovers that she doesn't want to rat out her friends. She wants to stay with the smoke. So, the necklace they gave her to open when she was there was thrown into the fire by her. It turns out that destruction gives out a signal, so the authorities come to get Tally and Shay and everyone at the smoke. At the end, Tally and another boy (forgot his name) try to save Shay since they escaped? In the end, Shay and Tally have the surgery that turns them into Pretties. That is the end and I'm sorry that I haven't read it recently. : ( P.S. add me as contacts.
