The United States next main assault rifle?

Question

Modern day soldiers carry M16A4's so I was just wondering, what do you think will be the next main rifle for the United States? And also what's the standard pistol that's issued to soldiers? My guess is that a soldier has an M16A4 and a M9? And what do you think will be the future main secondary for the U.S.?

have you seen the variants of weapons we have right now. there is about so many possibilities now. the weapon that will be used in the future is one which you can not even get pictures of yet. they are really paranoid of  someone stealing it. many rumors suggest motion tracker . sonar or another scanning location device

As of what I am seeing today, the SCAR is being field tested by SF guys.  Could be a good weapon for the future.  It's just hard to replace the M4

the xm8 and oicw xm29 programs have been scrapped but im guessing its gonna be a gas piston operated M4 thats alot more relibable than the old one. the SCAR-L is being used in small numbers in the SF along with the HK416.

There is no such thing as an "assault rifle," in my opinion. That term was invented by the media. It's called either an automatic or a semi-automatic rifle, or a machine gun.

If a car has an automatic transmission and modern technology, you don't invent a PC name to apply to it - the car is simply an automatic or a manual.

well, my cousin was in the army and he had a 'Beretta' (don't know the version) as a side arm. and i think the M1 will be in service for a while... haven't they had that since the second world war? why fix whats not broken?

a lot of recently modernized army's have upgraded to the Steyr AUG A1 Assault Rifle. it has the improved accuracy and durability, it's also lighter and apparently easier to use. it has more adaptability than the m1 also. as the basic gun can be added with anything from longer barrels and long range scopes to rocket launchers and bayonets.

the xm8 from what i understand was dropped by the army for future deveopment, now H&K are developing a much more reliable and powerful ar-15. They call it the HK416. It basicly an m4 on steroids. The only parts it shares with the the current m16/4 is the barrel and trigger assembly. The lower reciever, bolt, buffer, gas system, have entirly redesigned to be able to shoot after the weapon has been dropped in sand and water right away without cleaning first. Plus it can be converted to anything from 11.5" barrel to a 24" sniper sytem barrel. It can also be used to fire the AK .308 round instead of the NATO 5.56.

There is also the Barrett M468 but just look that one up

Right now there are some senantors pusing for the HK 416 or the SCAR both of which are similar to the M4 and both use the 5.56 round but are both more reliable mainly due to the piston blowback system instead of the gas going all the way back to the chamber. For now the M4 is being bought to replace the M16. So for the time being in the future it will be either the M4, HK416, or the SCAR.

my guess is that every soldier will be issued wooden swords and foam noodles. in case of serious battle combat
