  1. The original mascot of Virginia Tech was the "Gobblers" and in some respects is still a part of the Tech tradition.  Sometime in the 1970's  the coach at Tech was told the Gobbler was from the players "gobbling their food".  Evidently he didn't like this and change the mascot to the "Hokie" or the "Hokiebird".  The Hokiebird appears to be a combination of a turkey and cardinal.

  5. Well a hokie is an old term for a person who isn't legitimate...a con artist...a liar...someone who isn't what they claim to be...
