  1. I think it's interesting to see about the countries these women come from.  A good number of them grew up on the Clay Courts so I think that is also a factor.

  2. I agree that a lot of it has to do with their attitude towards hard work and hard training.  Just look at the tour and the number of tournaments the players from Eastern Europe play vs. the West.  They also seem to complain less about the strain of the tour and that they have to play a lot.

I think a big factor now is that those players also have access to top coaches and therefore can combine their grit with better coaching.  Although even in the past we've seen major glimpses of talent from the East (Navratilova and Seles).

  3. Believe me, it has less to do with discipline and professionalism and more to do with talent and coincidence.  Any player from any country that is good enough to be pro has proven that they have discipline.   Professionalism doesn't win matches.  Talent and hard work does.  The former communist countries just happen to be producing a high rate of talented players more so than the west at the moment.  It is an ever-changing phenomenon.  There was a time in the late 70s and 80s where the last 16 of the French were mostly Americans and Swedes.  Nothing new, and it will change again.  Maybe Aussies and Spaniards?  Who knows?

Edit:  I don't know why you are making this a cultural issue.  It is prejudice to state that just because someone came from an ex-communist country that they automatically have more desire and will and determination.  While I do admit that some American players are spoiled, there are spoiled players from every country and there are determined, mannered players from every country.  So, my final thought is that where someone was born has no bearing on whether or not they will make a good tennis player and to make assumptions based on what you see on TV is a poor judgement of culture and character.

  4. i really think in not about the country, it's about the person

his/her determination, love for tennis, hardwork and also the talent

    i really miss justine henin

  6. yes, i guess you have a point. the kids in ex-communist countries tend to be more disciplined, and petriotic. they have more sense of urgency.

while kids from rich countries tend to be lazy, no?
