The Waste Management Phoenix Open off to a frosty start
The Waste Management Phoenix Open, an event that is known as the greatest show on grass, became the greatest show on
ICE. Yes folks, you’ve read it right. The Open had to undergo a four-hour delay because of frost; a very surprising development, considering the desert location of the event.
The players finally could get to the practice range at around 11 AM, and the first group teed off at 11:40 AM. With the state of affairs as it was, the fans had to find some other ways to keep themselves well entertained till the show finally got on the
road. Luckily for them the Waste(d), pun intended, Management Phoenix Open location has an abundance of bars.
It looked like everyone was getting ready to ski off rather than tee off, with the temperature in the low 30’s and everyone bundled up in jackets, scarves, beanies and fur.
The few fans, who had managed to brave the harsh weather conditions for the game we all love, were immediately drawn into the game by the group consisting of the Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson and Bill Haas. The trio burned brighter than the sun and warmed
the hearts of the audience despite the chilly conditions.
The PGA seemed to be playing their cards quite well, as they teamed up Phil and Bubba again after they completely stole the show at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open. The PGA officials that were looking for a re-enactment of the drama, were not disappointed
as Mickelson made his way on to the leaderboard at an impressive four under par. However, Haas had an agenda of his own and completely stole the duos' thunder. Hass recorded a six under 66. Coming out of the first round, he shares the lead with Jason Bohn,
Tom Lehman and Tom Gillis.
The Torrey Pines victor, Bubba was one under par in the harsh conditions. This was understandable as the weather conditions were at exactly the opposite end of the spectrum from the sunny conditions in California. He told reporters that the reason behind
his not-so-brilliant performance was the strain from the last week and that he felt drained and desperately needed some rest. We bet the delays and the weather only made matters worse for him. However, perhaps the delay was actually a blessing in disguise,
giving him a much needed break.
Don’t count him out just yet folks, he may still play catch-up and come out on top.
