The Wave Muscat skipper Leigh McMillan excited to participate in 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 8
World’s top 11 Extreme 40 boats will gather at the region of Adalucia in Almeria for the commencement of 2011 Extreme Sailing Series Act 8, which is the second last event of the circuit, on October 12. Along with many others, The Wave Muscat’s skipper helm,
Leigh McMillan, is ready to take part in the competition.
Speaking about the environment at Almeria, McMillan said, “This event has offered some pretty spectacular and very close racing particularly inside the harbour here. With any kind of wind it can be full-on boat on boat battling. I think it's inevitable that
we will get some full-on situations in the stadium racing.”
The Wave Muscat grabbed back-to-back event victories at the Extreme Sailing Series Act 5 in Cowes and Act 6 at Trapani, but they are still on fourth position in the overall standings. They could not perform according to standards in the previous act at Nice
and tumbled down to ninth place with 156 points.
The 30-year-old McMillan explained, “That one event in Nice was pretty tough. But in reality, we have already far exceeded what we thought we could achieve this year and even if we can get back in contention with the leaders, it is really about racing well
and that is all we have set ourselves to do here.”
The overall standings of Extreme Sailing Series after seven acts are given below:
1. Groupe Edmond de Rothschild; Pierre Pennec, Christophe Espagnon, Thierry Fouchier, Hervé Cunningham = 61 points
2. Luna Rossa; Max Sirena, Paul Campbell-James, Alister Richardson, Manuel Modena = 59 points
3. Emirates Team New Zealand; Adam Beashel, Ray Davies, Jeremy Lomas, Derek Seward = 54 points
4. The Wave, Muscat; Leigh McMillan, Kyle Langford, Nick Hutton, Khamis Al Anbouri = 52 points
5. Red Bull Extreme Sailing; Roman Hagara, Hans Peter Steinacher, Matt Adams, Craig Monk = 49 points
6. Artemis Racing; Terry Hutchinson, Sean Clarkson, Rodney Ardern, Julien Cressant = 48 points
7. Alinghi; Tanguy Cariou, Yann Guichard, Nils Frei, Yves Detrey = 48 points
8. Oman Air; Ben Ainslie, Kinley Fowler, David Carr, Nasser Al Mashari = 38 points
9. Team GAC Pindar; Ian Williams, Mischa Heemrskerk, Andrew Walsh, Brad Webb = 21 points
10. Niceforyou; Alberto Barovier, Stefano Rizzi, Daniele De Luca, Simone De Mari = 16 points
11. Team Extreme; Roland Gaebler, Nahid Gaebler, Antón Paz, Tom Buggy = 15 points
McMillan believes they can fight back at the port of Almeria and put up a good show in the event. He reckons that the Act 8 of Extreme Sailing will provide them with tough competitions and the side has pulled up their socks for the battle.
