The Williams Sisters will feature in an exhibition match in Milan – Tennis News
Winner of 13 Grand Slam tournaments, America’s Serena Williams and her sister Venus Williams will be playing individual exhibition matches at Milan this weekend. The two former world number one players will make a comeback after
a series of injuries to meet Italy’s players this Saturday.
Serena will be competing against the former Roland Garros champion, 11th ranked Francesca Schiavone, whereas Venus will go one-on-one against Flavia Pennetta in their exhibition matches. It is for the first time after
the US Open in August this year that the William Sisters will be seen in action in Milan. The two big names missed the 2009 and 2010 edition of Fed Cup, when Schiavone and Pennetta secured the title for their country.
The Milan Exhibition event organisers have cited that a total of four singles matches and one doubles clash will be featured at the Mediolanum Forum on Saturday evening. Serena and Venus have been sidelined for most of the 2011
WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season because of their persistent injuries and it is anticipated that their return on court will be an impactful one.
Serena played just 25 matches this year, winning 22 of them and bagging two WTA championship titles to finish off the season at number 12 in the women’s rankings. Her last appearance was at the US Open, where she beat all the odds
to reach the final of the grand Slam event, defeating top players like Vitoria Azarenka, Ana Ivanovic, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and world number one Caroline Wozniacki to reach the final on her return to the professional tennis circuit. She was stunned by
the 10th ranked Samantha Stosur of Australia in straight sets, 2-6, 3-6, to drop the Grand Slam winning opportunity.
On the other hand, Venus’ rankings have fallen drastically from number five spot to world number 104 by the year 2011 end. The American played merely 11 matches this season, winning eight of them and failing to extend his title
count of 18. She skipped Roland Garros this season due to injury and also suffered early exits from the other three Grand Slam voyages she had in 2011. Venus last played at the US Open, where her injury once again forced her to pull out from the second round
match against Sabine Lisicki.
Venus commented on her Facebook account that she was getting prepared for her Exhibition match in Milan for the first time and will throw out her best to get some good results for her fans.
