The Winner - ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, Part-1
The final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 is being played today at Wankhede Stadium, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755.
India and Sri Lanka have previously encountered seven times in the World Cup. The Lankan lions have beaten http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 four times; twice they were at the receiving end and one match ended without a result. We will highlight the matches played between the two teams and performance of their outfits in those matches.
1979 Prudential World Cup
The first encounter took place at Old Trafford, Manchester on 16th and 18th of June 1979. Sri Lanka played their innings on 16th June, and scored 238 runs in the allotted 60 overs for the loss of five wickets, after being offered to bat by India. Sunil Wettimuny was the top scorer with 67 runs with Duleep Mendis close behind with 64 runs.

India was bowled out at 191 runs in 54.1 overs on 18th June; Dilip Vengsarkar scored 36 runs with Anshuman Gaekwad who contributed 33 runs to the partnership.
Tony Opatha and Somachandra De Silva took three wickets each, Stanley De Silva had two wickets, and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bandula-Warnapura-c47263 claimed a wicket as well.
Sri Lanka won the match by 47 runs.
1992 Benson and Hedges World Cup
Sri Lanka had only bowled twice, with India scoring only one run, when the play succumbed to rain and ended without a result.
1996 Wills World Cup
First match
The pool match was played on 2nd http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Azharuddin-c76823 remained unbeaten on 72 runs.
Sri Lankan bowlers, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ravindra-Pushpakumara-c84241 and Kumar Dharmasena shared a wicket each.
Sri Lanka achieved the target by scoring 272 runs in 48.4 overs for a loss of four wickets. Sanath Jayasuriya was in top form in that tournament, and scored 79 runs off 76 balls with 2 sixes and 9 fours as Hashan Tillakaratne was unbeaten on 70 runs.

Sri Lanka won the match by six wickets.
Second match
Both teams qualified for the Semi-Final which was played at Eden Gardens, Calcutta, on 13th March, 1996. Sri Lanka scored 251 runs in 50 overs as they lost eight wickets. Aravinda de Silva was their highest scorer with 66 runs, while Roshan Mahanama was retired hurt on 58 runs.

India had lost eight wickets by the time they had scored 120 runs, with Tendulkar contributing 65 runs. The crowd set fire to a few stands, and disturbed the fielders by throwing different articles at them in agitation. Once the game resumed, after a short break, the hostile crowd was once again back at vandalising stadium property, and disrupting players. When finally the match referee, Clive Lloyd stepped in and stopped the game, awarding the match to the Sri Lankan team.

Sri Lanka reached the final, beat http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 and won the 1996 Wills World Cup.
